The Painter's Daughter by Julie Klassen (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are 100% my own.

About the book-

Sophie Dupont assists her father in his studio, keeping her own artwork out of sight. In private, she paints the picturesque north Devon coast, popular with artists--including handsome Wesley Overtree, who seems more interested in Sophie than the landscape.

Captain Stephen Overtree is accustomed to taking on his brother Wesley's responsibilities. Near the end of his leave, he is sent to find his brother and bring him home. Upon reaching Devonshire, however, Stephen is stunned to learn that Wesley has sailed for Italy and left his host's daughter in serious trouble.

Stephen feels duty-bound to act, and strangely protective of the young lady, who somehow seems familiar. Wanting to make some recompense for his own past failings as well as his brother's, Stephen proposes to Miss Dupont. He does not offer love, but marriage "in name only" to save her from scandal. If he dies in battle, as he fears, she will at least be a respectable widow.

Desperate for a way to escape her predicament, Sophie finds herself torn between her first love and this brooding man she barely knows. Dare she wait for Wesley to return? Or should she elope with the captain and pray she doesn't come to regret it?

My thoughts-

I don't even know where to begin with this story. I loved every single second of every single page, just as I have become accustomed to with each new Julie Klassen novel that comes out. This one is still her usual regency era fare, and it still has a very Jane Austen-esque feel which I love, but this book had the added element of scandal which was new and I quite enjoyed. Life isn't usually cookie cutter clean, even back in the day, so I appreciated a look into what might have happened in a scandalous situation in that time period.  I was immediately sympathetic for Sophie's character and enthralled with Stephen Overtree from their first meeting. He had a little bit of Mr. Darcy's brood going on, but right away we are shown he has a soft and caring heart, regardless of how it seems on the outside. I am glad that there was an opportunity to get to know Stephen as he and Sophie get to know each other before he went off to war. I enjoyed the entire cast of characters that live at or visit Overtree Hall. Klassen does a wonderful job of really making you feel like you understand the characters and the descriptions of the settings are amazing too. I absolutely recommend The Painter's Daughter (and all of Julie Klassen's novels) to anyone who enjoys regency era romances. She is, in my eyes, our current day Jane Austen and for that I am grateful.

Maple Syrup Cookbook by Ken Haedrich (Cookbook Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

Maple Syrup Cookbook has convinced thousands of readers that maple syrup makes just about everything taste better. Now, the revised third edition of this classic cookbook features full-color photographs and a dozen of the author's favorite new recipes. In all, the book now offers more than 100 ways to enjoy maple syrup at every meal, including Buttermik Corn Cakes, Banana Crepes with Maple Rum Sauce (perfect for an elegant brunch), Maple Cream Scones, Lacy Sweet-Potato Patties, Maple Bacon Strata, Curried Pumpkin-Apple Soup, Creamy Maple Fondue, Maple-Glazed Brussels Sprouts, Orange-Maple Wings, Beet and Pear Relish, Maple-Roasted Root Vegetables, Steamed Brown Bread, Maple Onion Marmalade, Hot & Spicy Shrimp Kabobs, Chicken with Maple-Mustard Glaze, and Crispy Maple Spareribs. There are barbecue sauces and salad dressings and dozens of tempting desserts, from Almond Bars and Coffee Chip Cookies to Maple Apple Pie, Maple Pecan Pie, Maple-Ginger Ice Cream, and much more. There's even a recipe for Maple Bread-and-Butter Pickles. This is a treasure chest of delightful recipes you'll turn to again and again.

My thoughts-

Maple syrup is one of my favorite ingredients in food. I love a great quality maple syrup to top my waffles or pancakes or to use in place of white sugar in recipes. My absolute favorite meal of the day is breakfast. If I could get away with eating breakfast for every single meal, I totally would. Ken Haedrich's Maply Syrup Cookbook offers a wide variety of breakfast recipes so I my mouth was watering just flipping through the pages. I was happy to also see the inclusion of other meal types that use maple syrup including sides and entrees. One of my favorite parts of the cookbook were the recipes for sauces, jams and dressings. There are 100 recipes in the book, so plenty of ways to utilize your maple syrup! I recommend Maple Syrup Cookbook to the breakfast or brunch lover, or someone looking to use less white sugar in their recipes.

This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

10:00 a.m.
The principal of Opportunity, Alabama's high school finishes her speech, welcoming the entire student body to a new semester and encouraging them to excel and achieve.

10:02 a.m.
The students get up to leave the auditorium for their next class.

10:03
The auditorium doors won't open.

10:05
Someone starts shooting.

This explosive, emotional, page-turning debut about a high school held hostage is told from the perspective of four teens—each with their own reason to fear the boy with the gun.

My thoughts-

I was a Junior in high school the year that the Columbine massacre took place. I know there were many mass school shootings before that, but we were the first generation to have 24/7 access to what was happening in the world and I think because of that, these shootings have been occurring more often in the years since Columbine. I think This Is Where it Ends did a wonderful job of portraying what it might be like, what it would feel like, for the teens in the novel that are in the situation. It helps us understand not only their fear, but each student's perspective offers more insight into the perpetrator's life and the time leading up to the event.  It was not an easy read at all, but it was well done nonetheless. I couldn't put it down and read it in just a couple of days. I would recommend This Is Where It Ends to anyone who likes fast paced books and who don't mind heavy subject matter.

This Is Where It Ends will be available January 5, 2016. You can pre-order your copy on Amazon.com.

Kid Athletes by David Stabler (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

The author and illustrator of Kid Presidents have reteamed to share 20 true tales from the childhoods of famous athletes. From Babe Ruth (so incorrigible that his parents put him in reform school at age 7) to Muhammad Ali (who learned to fight at age 12 after a thief stole his bicycle), Kid Athletes is packed with inspirational stories from the world of sports. Billie Jean King rose from modest circumstances to win 39 Grand Slam championships; Wilma Rudolph triumphed over polio to become the fastest woman on earth; and martial arts legend Bruce Lee credited his success, in part, to childhood dance lessons. Every goal, touchdown, and championship comes to life in these kid-friendly and relatable stories, all with Doogie Horner's whimsical full-color illustrations. Kid Athletes is a slam dunk for young sports fans everywhere.

My thoughts-

A while back while shopping at Costco my husband and I spotted an intriguing kids book called Kid Presidents. Our oldest child, Madelyn, has her sights set on the oval office so we thought she would enjoy the book. When we brought it home, it turned out that our twin boys also are super into this book. In fact, it is their most reached for book at reading time. I knew as soon as I saw Kid Athletes that my kids would absolutely adore it. The premise of the "kid" books is to share stories from the childhood of these famous people. The stories often show the individual overcome an obstacle or adversity and their perseverance to meet their goals. Not only is Kid Athletes a cool way to learn about the athlete growing up, but there are great lessons for kids to take away from these stories. There is a good mix of athletes represented in the book, from the super recognizable (Peyton Manning,  Danica Patrick, Michael Jordan) to some inspiring people that may be new names to your kids (Babe Didrickson, Bruce Lee, Muhammed Ali). Kid Athletes is a great book to share with your kids, you will both probably learn new things about your favorite athletes and maybe end up with some new favorites!

Ashley Bell by Dean Koontz (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

From #1 bestselling author Dean Koontz—the must-read thriller of the year, for readers of dark psychological suspense and modern classics of mystery and adventure.

The girl who said no to death.

Bibi Blair is a fierce, funny, dauntless young woman—whose doctor says she has one year to live.

She replies, “We'll see.”

Her sudden recovery astonishes medical science.

An enigmatic woman convinces Bibi that she escaped death so that she can save someone else. Someone named Ashley Bell.

But save her from what, from whom? And who is Ashley Bell? Where is she?

Bibi's obsession with finding Ashley sends her on the run from threats both mystical and worldly, including a rich and charismatic cult leader with terrifying ambitions.

Here is an eloquent, riveting, brilliantly paced story with an exhilarating heroine and a twisting, ingenious plot filled with staggering surprises. Ashley Bell is a new milestone in literary suspense from the long-acclaimed master.

My thoughts-

In my younger days, I read suspense and mystery pretty exclusively but these days it has to be a pretty interesting plot to catch my eye and pry me away from my preferred genres of the moment (historical fiction, contemporary fiction, ya, classics). Ashley Bell sounded like an interesting plot and I remember liking some of Koontz's other works so I was excited to dive in. I thought the novel started off a bit slow, but midway through I had an innate need to know what was happening in this book and it became a page turner for me. Upon reflection of the slow start, I realized it was just great character development that paid off later in the book. I enjoy books that keep me guessing and have new or rarely used plot points and I think Ashley Bell definitely met both of those expectations. Although I did find it to start slow, I enjoyed the pay off of those little details adding to the characters or of it adding a new dimension to  the loose ends as they were resolved at the end of the book. I would recommend Ashley Bell to anyone who enjoys suspense stories with twists and turns you may not be expecting!

Featuring her New Year's cleanse, homemade Christmas gifts, and ideas for every holiday, special occasion, and casual weekend in between, this is Giada’s 365-approach to cooking up a happy life.

My thoughts-

One of my favorite pasttimes is watching my favorite chefs' shows on Food Network and the Cooking Channel. I always have plans that I will dvr the episodes and try to knock out the recipes as they show them to us during the show, but it never seems to work out that way so instead I love looking up their recipes on FoodNetwork.com. That website is a life saver for me! Especially when I am in a funk and can't think up new recipes to try out. One of my absolute favorite go-to food network chef's is Giada De Laurentiis. Most of the time that I find myself on Food Network's website, I end up making one of her recipes. I was super excited to receive her newest cookbook, Happy Cooking, because it is supposed to be a book full of healthy recipes that are not super difficult to make. I enjoy being in the kitchen, but as the mom of three young kids and of one very busy husband, I find it difficult some days to spend a long time preparing food in the kitchen. Happy Cooking is a great cookbook. It has simply, yet tasty recipes for every meal, as well as sides, snacks, dips, and desserts. Just to make sure all bases are covered there are also fantastic recipes for the holidays included as well. I love the gorgeous pictures of the beautiful food, as well as Giada's tips for well being and health sprinkled throughout the book. Happy Cooking came out at just the right time, I think it would make a fantastic gift for the person in your life that love's to cook! I recommend this cookbook to anyone who enjoys eating well, but also likes to save time where they can.

Concussion by Jeanne Marie Laskas (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Will Smith, Concussion is the riveting, unlikely story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the pathologist who made one of the most significant medical discoveries of the twenty-first century, a discovery that challenges the existence of America's favorite sport and puts Omalu in the crosshairs of football's most powerful corporation: the NFL.

In September of 2002, in a dingy morgue in downtown Pittsburgh, a young forensic neuropathologist named Bennet Omalu picked up a scalpel and made a discovery that would rattle America in ways he never intended. Omalu was new to America, chasing the dream, a deeply spiritual man escaping the wounds of civil war in Nigeria. The body on the slab in front of him belonged to a fifty-year-old named Mike Webster—aka “Iron Mike”—a Hall of Fame center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the greatest to ever play the game. After retiring in 1990, Webster had suffered a dizzyingly steep decline. Toward the end of his life, he was living out of his van, Tasering himself to relieve his chronic pain, and fixing his rotting teeth with Super Glue. How did this happen? Omalu asked himself. How did a young man like Mike Webster end up like this? The search for answers would change Omalu's life forever and put him in the crosshairs of one of the most powerful corporations in America: the National Football League. What Omalu discovered in Mike Webster's brain—proof that his mental deterioration was no accident, but a disease, caused by relentless blows to the head, that could affect everyone playing the game—was the one truth the NFL would do anything to keep secret.

Taut, gripping, and gorgeously told, Concussion is the stirring true story of one unlikely man's courageous decision to stand up to a multibillion-dollar colossus bent on silencing him, and to tell the world the truth.

My thoughts-

I saw a preview for the movie version of Concussion awhile back and I knew right away it would be a movie my husband and I would go and see together. I was even more excited when I found out that it was based on a book. I am not one of those people that has a problem seeing movies based on books. I think it expands the experience and sometimes offers a new perspective on the content.

Concussion was an interesting book from the get go. I found Bennet Omalu's whole story fascinating. I enjoyed that first half of the book that told us about his roots and growing up in Nigeria and about his family. It also laid out the reason he came to America and why he was  put on the career path he was. I found that interesting without the aspect of him bringing forth the information about the damage repeated blows and concussions cause to football players, but his research on these brains of football players and the trouble he had trying to bring attention to it, make this book a page turner. Omalu is an intriguing character both in his daily life and in his career. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading biographies of interesting people.

Concussion will be available on November 24. You can pre-order your copy today!

Concussion, the Major Motion Picture will be released on Christmas day. Enjoy the trailer below-

Happy Herbivore: Holidays & Gatherings by Lindsay S. Nixon (Cookbook Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

With Happy Herbivore Holidays & Gatherings, your healthy, hearty dishes will be the life of the party!

My thoughts-

By the sheer amount of cookbooks I review on this blog, you have probably caught on to the fact that I love to be in the kitchen. October kicks off my absolute favorite time of year. The holiday season is filled with family and friends, joy and cheer, celebration and lots of great food! I love to host guests at my house for the holidays and I also have a very large family that gets together for *the* biggest food holiday, Thanksgiving, and we each bring several dishes. Many of my aunts have their signature thing that they always have to bring (one brings coconut pies, another pumpkin pies, we have one person that always brings pea salad and another that always provides the mashed potatoes). Since I am of the younger generation, I do not have an assigned food so I like to try out new things. This year I am particularly interested in offering a healthier version of whatever I bring, but that still brings the great flavor we expect this time of year. I have many of the Happy Herbivore cookbooks so I was really excited to see that there is one focused on just holidays and gatherings. All of the recipes are mouthwatering. Even though they are vegan, they all sound like they would be fantastic and I know from experience making some of Lindsay Nixon's other recipes that they will be well received by carnivores and herbivores alike.  There are veganized versions of Thanksgiving and Christmas staples, but there are also sections devoted to New Year's eve and the super bowl, as well as an entire section on appetizers in case you want to change things up. There are so many delicious sounding recipes, I don't even really know where to start. I think that I may make the magic cookies first. They DO sound magical (and super tasty). I would recommend Happy Herbivore Holidays & Gatherings to anyone looking for a new spin on classic recipes or who will be serving vegetarians or vegans this holiday season.

Nashville Eats by Jennifer Justus (Cookbook Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

If it seems like Nashville is everywhere these days— that's because it is. GQ recently declared it “Nowville,” and it has become the music hotspot for both country and rock. But as hot as the music scene is, the food scene is even hotter.

In Nashville Eats, more than 100 mouthwatering recipes reveal why food lovers are headed South for Nashville's hot chicken, buttermilk biscuits, pulled pork sandwiches, cornmeal-crusted catfish, chow chow, fried green tomatoes, and chess pie. Author Jennifer Justus whips up the classics—such as pimento cheese and fried chicken—but also includes dishes with a twist on traditional Southern fare—such as Curried Black Chickpeas or Catfish Tacos. And alongside the recipes, Jennifer shares her stories of Nashville—the people, music, history, and food that make it so special.

 My thoughts-

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Nashville. I took several vacations here in my younger days with some of my cousins and aunts that I am rather close to and those are still some of my best memories. And yes, the food there is a part of those memories! I live in Texas and generally I think we have better food than everyone else, but I absolutely loved the food in Nashville. There are certain things that you just associate with the south and I think food is definitely one of them. Nashville Eats is full of Tennessee comfort food. You will find in this book exactly what you may expect: recipes for buttermilk biscuits, fried chicken, bread and rolls, and a plethora of desserts. You will also find sides and salads among other amazing foods. The thing about southern food is while it is full of bold flavor, it almost always requires simple ingredients and isn't too difficult to make. I find that to be true of Nashville Eats. This cookbook has me itching to go back and explore the culinary side of the capital of Tennessee. In the meantime I am thrilled to have these awesome recipes to try out in my own kitchen as I reminisce once again about one of my favorite vacation spots.

Amish Christmas at North Star: Four Stories of Love and Family (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Blogging For Books in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are 100% my own.

About the book-

One night four lives entered the world by the hands of an Amish midwife, just outside North Star, Pennsylvania.
Rebekah’s Babies, as they are called, are now grown adults and in four heartwarming novellas each young person experiences a journey of discovery, a possibility of love, and the wonder of Christmas.

Guiding Star
by Katie Ganshert

Curiosity gets the best of Englischer Chase Wellington when he investigates the twenty-five-year-old disappearance of an Amish baby. When he finds adventurous Elle McAllister in Iowa will his discoveries upend her world?

Mourning Star
by Amanda Flower

Eden Hochstetler slips from her parents’ fudge shop to investigate the death of her friend Isaac.  Who is guilty? Isaac’s handsome great nephew Jesse, an angry Englischer, or someone else?

In the Stars
by Cindy Woodsmall

Heartbroken Kore Detweiler avoids North Star after Savilla Beiler rejects his love.  But when he is unexpectedly called to return home, he and Savilla must join forces to keep a family together.

Star of Grace
by Mindy Starns Clark and Emily Clark

Andy Danner left North Star to join a new Amish settlement in Mississippi. His little brother devises a scheme to bring Andy home for Christmas and unwittingly unleashes the power of forgiveness in a reclusive widower’s life.

My thoughts-

Around October, I start itching to immerse myself in all things holiday related. I love the joy and spirit of the holiday season and I want to make it last as long as I can! One of the ways I like to do that is by reading Christmas themed books. I am not generally a fan of short stories, but there is something about Christmas short stories that I can't get enough of! The draw to this book is that one of my favorite authors, Katie Ganshert, wrote one of the stories. Amish fiction isn't her normal genre, so I was even more curious to read it and see how she did. Not surprisingly, her story was my favorite in the book and loved that she was the anchor to the stories (her story was the first one in the book and she wrote the epilogue). The book was about several babies who had been born on the same day by the hand of the same midwife 25 years prior. We get to find out where they are now in life and enjoy reading about their romances. The stories stand well alone but are tied together because the main characters were all born on the same evening. While I really liked the stories and would recommend the books to friends looking for a lighthearted read, something about them didn't feel like traditional Amish fiction, so that may rub some people look for traditional Amish fiction the wrong way. I still think it is worth a read and full of innocent romance. I recommend Amish Christmas at North Star to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction or Christmas themed short stories.

When Calls the Heart: Follow Your Heart

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the dvd via Edify Media in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About When Calls the Heart-

From celebrated author Janette Oke (The Love Comes Softly series) comes a rigorous and romantic adventure as epic as the wide frontier. Erin Krakow (Army Wives), Daniel Lissing (Eye Candy), Jack Wagner (Melrose Place) and Lori Laughlin (Full House, 90210) star in When Calls the Heart, "a beautiful story with roots in relationships, self-empowerment, and the enduring power of love" (Common Sense Media).

While Jack and Elizabeth's relationship has cooled following their arguments in Hamilton, Jack is hot on the trail of a counterfeiter right in Hope Valley! When he finds the culprit, a two-fisted brawl ensues as Jack apprehends the man. Seeing Jack in danger prompts Elizabeth to confront her feelings and seek him out...but she inadvertently sets Rip, Jack's dog, loose at the same time. As a violent storm bears down on Hope Valley, Jack and Elizabeth search for Rip and take shelter in an old mineshaft together. But the storm won't be escaped so easily, and the unstable shaft begins to collapse...

My thoughts-

These last two episodes were so full of drama and intense story lines. Of course, the main focus is on Jack and Elizabeth. They have definitely had their ups and downs this season and I was unsure of how the season was going to end...without giving anything away, I will definitely say there are some things hanging up in the air! I couldn't believe the shock of the last scene and I will be looking forward to season 3 to see what happens! I think my favorite story from these last couple of episodes of season two is the budding romance between Rosemary and Lee. I loved watching the scenes play out. It was super cute! Sorry to be vague, but I don't want to ruin the fun! If you haven't watched When Calls the Heart yet and you are a fan of historical fiction, you are missing out. Tune in to Hallmark Channel or purchase these dvds and settle in for a bing watching session. This is the perfect show for it!

When Calls the Heart is inspired by a series of novels by Janette Oke. You can find these novels on Amazon.com.

Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook by Pearl Barrett & Serene Allison (Cookbook Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Blogging For Books in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

In their debut cookbook, the Trim Healthy Mama’s share hundreds of delicious, healthy recipes to help readers successfully slim down while eating well.  This companion cookbook to the bestselling Trim Healthy Mama Plan is just what readers have been waiting for. It features simple, mouthwatering, recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner—including slow cooker and one-pot meals, hearty soups and salads, omelets and waffles, pizzas, breads and more.  No Trim Healthy Mama should be deprived, so there are also favorite snacks, delectable desserts, and the smoothies, sippers and teas fans love. With  pantry-stocking advice, time-saving tips, and information on how to cook for the entire family, the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook offers a delicious and nutritious way to make trim and healthy meals with less stress—so you have more time with your loved ones.

My thoughts-

The Trim Healthy Mama way of eating is quite popular among my circle of friends. I always see Facebook posts mentioning it and while I got the general gist of things ( sugar free, refined grain free, lots of clean eating) I never read the original book. I was happy to find an overview at the beginning of the book written for someone like me who hadn't read the original book or for someone who needed a refresher course. The Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook offers a wide variety of healthy yet tasty recipes ready to satisfy the palette while also feeling up your belly. I love that there are a wide variety of offerings to make sure there is truly something for everyone. I don't think I really noticed a recipe in the book that I wouldn't try at least once. I also love that although this book is about keeping healthy and trim, there is a section on indulgences at the end. The desserts are modified using sweeteners like stevia and they all sound delicious. I can't wait to test some of them out. I recommend this book to any woman trying to eat right and feel great about her choices. It's called Trim Healthy Mama, but this book is for everyone from all walks of life. I am definitely glad I picked this one up. I know it will get a great deal of use in my kitchen!

When Calls the Heart: Heart & Home

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the dvd via Edify Media in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the show-

When Calls the Heart is a television show on the Hallmark Channel based on the writings of Janette Oke that debuted on the Hallmark Channel to more than 3 million viewers, making it the #2 show for the night on all of cable for the primary telecast at 9 p.m and #3 overall in households. The show is about Elizabeth Thatcher, a young high society woman who is now working as a teacher on the western frontier.

About the episode-

Jack and Elizabeth leave Hope Valley and rush back to the city of Hamilton when they learn that Jack's brother, Tom, was involved in an automobile accident...with Elizabeth's sister, Julie But Tom and Julie are hiding something about the incident, a deceit that puts Jack and Elizabeth at odds with their families...and with each other. Their trip is further complicated when Tom and Julie endeavor to run off together- via train this time- and Elizabeth's father offers Jack a job- an offer that puts Jack and Elizabeth's fledgling romance in peril yet again.

My thoughts-

This season has been full of so much drama! I am loving the addition of Tom and Julie to the story lines. They definitely add a new flare to the show. What I don't love are the things getting in the way for Jack and Elizabeth. There have been some intense moments and misunderstandings in Heart & Home and it makes me want to yell at my tv. I really feel bad for Jack, I feel like I relate more to his side of things, but  feel bad for Elizabeth too because she doesn't mean any harm and doesn't realize how her reactions to certain things make Jack feel. I love the sweet and very romantic relationship of Jack and Elizabeth and I absolutely hate seeing it strained. I have loved seeing Elizabeth interact with her family and in the complete opposite environment of what we are used to seeing of her usually being in Hope Valley. There are no shortage of interesting characters this season. I can't wait to see what happens with all of the residents of Hope Valley next!

When Calls the Heart is inspired by a series of novels by Janette Oke. You can find these novels on Amazon.com.

Adrenaline (Movie Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the dvd from Edify Media in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the movie-

After a crash leaves him paralyzed, drag racer Joseph Jenkins thinks his life is over. But his hospital roommate Elijah slowly gives him new perspective. When he returns home, his Uncle Paul gets him competing again---and winning. But can he face his nemesis Jason Skynard, the man he was challenging when the accident happened?

My thoughts-

I am usually not a fan of  drag racing movies, but I thought the story line to this one sounded interesting. I was right. My favorite parts of Adrenaline were the parts where Joe interacts with Elijah. Elijah is the best part of the movie and brings out the best in Joe. It was great to watch his attitude and thoughts about himself change throughout the movie.  I actually found myself enjoying the parts in the movie about racing as well. Adrenaline would make a great pick for a family movie night- intense and dramatic enough to hold an adults attention, but cool enough for a younger person to want to watch.

Keep Moving by Dick Van Dyke with Todd Gold (Book Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

Beloved Hollywood icon Dick Van Dyke will celebrate his 90th birthday in December 2015. He’s an established legend, having starred in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. And yet he’s still keeping himself busy, entertaining America on television, movies, the stage, and social media. Everyone wonders, “How does he do it?” For the first time, Van Dyke will share his secrets and tips on old age: Just keep moving.

In a fun and folksy way of addressing readers, Keep Moving will serve as an instruction book on how to embrace old age with a positive attitude. The chapters are filled with exclusive personal anecdotes that explore various themes on aging: how to adapt to the physical and social changes, deal with loss of friends and loved ones, stay current, fall in love again, and “keep moving” every day like there’s no tomorrow.

My thoughts-

I will admit that I am probably not the target audience for this book about aging (although I am sure I will be there in the blink of an eye) but Dick Van Dyke could literally write a dictionary and I would be the first in line to read it. I just think he is the funniest man on the planet and I am always interested in what he has to say. While the book would definitely be easier to relate for senior citizens, I got a kick reading Mr. Van Dyke's musings about old age and the "ageism" he often experiences. The book was, of course, quite funny but with  reaching a certain age also comes a certain amount of sadness because it is inevitable you will lose people along the way. I learned things I didn't know about Dick Van Dyke prior to reading this book and it put me in the mood to watch old reruns of my favorite comedy of all time The Dick Van Dyke Show. I think everyone should listen to what he has to say, so I would recommend Keep Moving to anyone who might one day be old and especially to anyone who enjoys a positive and funny outlook on life.

God Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their Bodies by Just Holcomb & Lindsey Holcomb

Disclosure of material connection: I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Litfuse Group in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book:

God Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their Bodies

"God made every part of you!"

It's easy to convey the message to children that their bodies---or particular parts of their bodies---are shameful. This misconception fuels confusion, embarrassment, and secrecy, and often prevents children from recognizing or reporting sexual abuse.
God Made All of Me is a simply-told, beautifully-illustrated story to help families talk about these sensitive issues with two- to eight-year-old children. Because the private parts of our bodies are private, the home is the ideal environment where a child should learn about his or her body and how it should be treated by others.

God Made All of Me starts from the fundamental truth that God created everything and applies that truth---the doctrine of creation---to kids and their bodies. It equips parents to talk with both boys and girls about their bodies and to help them understand the difference between the appropriate and inappropriate touch of others. God Made All of Me allows families to build a first line of defense against sexual abuse in the safety of their own homes.

God Made All of Me is the first children's book written by Rid of My Disgrace authors Justin and Lindsey Holcomb. Parents of young children themselves, the Holcombs regularly counsel victims of sexual abuse and are profoundly aware of the dangers kids face. Their simple and relatable story, designed to help children protect their bodies, will be an important resource for every family with young children.

My thoughts-

It seems like every time you  turn on  the news these days your hear  about  someone being sexually assaulted and those are  only the ones that are reported. I can  not even imagine how many people have been through  something  like that and feel too ashamed to come forward. It would be especially confusing to a child. I have 3 kids, all school aged, and I have tried to keep an open line of communication with them about their bodies, but telling them how to avoid sexual assault is a conversation  that is difficult to even  know where to start. God Made All of Me is a book that every single parent should have in their children's book collection. This book is presented in a way that is understandable to young children, but doesn't over elaborate on sexual assault. The focus is on teaching children that they are in control of who touches them (whether that be an unwanted hug, kiss, embrace, or inappropriate touching) and that they can say no. It gives them the words to stay in control of the situation and the power to know that if something ever happens that makes them uncomfortable that they 100% CAN tell a trusted adult (like mom, dad, or a teacher). I read this book with my three children, ages 6, 6, and 8, and they had questions or things to add on nearly every page. It definitely started a dialogue for my family and I am certain it would for yours as well. I absolutely think every parent should own a copy of God Made All of Me. It will help you start a conversation that may be tough to tackle on your own.

My thoughts-

I think if you asked anybody to look back on their childhood and name a cherished dessert, JELL-O will have been involved 9 times out of 10. I remember at our house that my mom was a busy working woman so when we would have JELL-O it was usually just plain and cut up into squares but we loved it that way. It was a real treat the times that she thought to cut up bananas and place them inside of the JELL-O mold! That was definitely one of my favorite treats as a kid. The Magic of JELL-O has a wide array of recipes. There are easy recipes for the novice cook or too busy to cook person and intricate recipes that look fabulous for the person who loves to be in the kitchen and show off their beautiful work. There are healthier recipes and more indulgent recipes. There is truly something for everyone. I can't wait to try to make some of these things to put in my kids' lunchboxes or surprise them with after school as an indulgent treat. I think they would especially enjoy the chocolate pudding cats and lollipop jiggles. I recommend this book to anyone with a sense of nostalgia or who just enjoys JELL-O recipes!

5 in 5 For Every Season by Michael Symon with Douglas Trattner (Cookbook Review)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

5 fresh ingredients + 5 minutes of heat = 165 recipes

Ridiculously easy from-scratch recipes to get you in and out of the kitchen in a flash every day of the week—now with sides and holiday dishes, too

The follow-up to the bestselling Michael Symon’s 5 in 5, this new book delivers 165 quick, easy, fresh recipes organized by season with an entire section devoted to making the holidays simpler than ever. Each chapter features inspired main courses as well as recipes for sides and 5 fun ways to celebrate the season, including no-bake summer fruit desserts and spiked drinks to warm up with in winter.

My thoughts-

I know that so many times when we eat something unhealthy at my house it is usually because I am tired and don't feel up to cooking something that is going to take me a long time. I think so many people equate clean eating with intricate cooking and complicated recipes and that just couldn't be further from the truth. I finally found a cookbook that has it all. Uncomplicated recipes with 5 main (all fresh) ingredients that do not take long at all to cook, all come together to look like you slaved over a gourmet meal. I love that there are sections for each season to cater to the changing trends and availability of certain foods during certain times. I also really enjoyed that there was a holiday guide in the back. I plan to put those menus to good use when Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around. I always have such a tough time eating well during the holiday, but now I have some healthy recipes to turn to!  I recommend 5 in 5 For Every Season to anyone looking to eat cleaner and wanting quick but healthy recipes.

The BetterCourse Premium Insulated Lunchbox

Disclosure of material connection- I received the product in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are 100% my own.

My husband works a ten hour shift in the emergency room as a nurse practitioner so he needs enough food sent with him to constitute a dinner. It can be difficult to send enough food for him if I don't have a container to hold all of his food, so previously he was just taking a couple of tupperware containers in a plastic bag...not my favorite thing in the world because it isn't a great environmental choice, but that was the only bag that was working for a while. I am so glad that I found the BetterCourse Premium Lunchbox. I had found lunchboxes previously that might have worked for him, but they were to feminine and there was no way he would have taken any of those. The BetterCourse premium lunchbox comes in a color that everyone will love and for added convenience comes with two different size bpa free containers for food. I love that it comes with the containers so that I automatically have a few that fit right in the box. Even when the containers are in the lunchbox together, they still leave plenty of room for maybe one more small container or a bottle of water. I like to fill the bigger container with a salad and then the smaller one with a casserole or soup or leftovers from our fridge. This lunchbox has made it much easier to prepare enough food for my husband to take to work to keep him full. I think it is the absolute perfect size for an adult or a teenager. I absolutely recommend The BetterCourse premium lunchbox to anyone looking for a decent sized carrier for their lunches.

90 Minutes in Heaven (Movie Edition) by Don Piper Book Review + Win a Copy

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are 100% my own

About the book-

On the way home from a conference, Don Piper’s car was crushed by a semi-truck that crossed into his lane. Medical personnel said he died instantly. While his body lay lifeless inside the ruins of his car, Piper experienced the glories of heaven, awed by its beauty and music. 90 minutes after the wreck, while a minister prayed for him, Piper miraculously returned to life on earth with only the memory of inexpressible heavenly bliss. Then his grueling recovery began.

My thoughts-

I have heard of Don Piper's book and it has been on my to-read list for as long as I can remember but for some reason I just hadn't got around to reading it. When I heard there was a movie version starring Hayden Christensen as Don, I knew it was time to finally read it. It was a quick and fascinating read. The part that really got to me is that Don Piper was physically dead and came back to life. When you read the book (and/or) watch the movie, I think you will be positive of the reason why. 90 Minutes in Heaven was more about the after of Don's visit to heaven and as I read the thoughts and feelings he went through, I thought that his was an honest account of going to Heaven and coming back. I think that it is exactly how I would feel. While the book isn't predominantly about his time in heaven, he does describe what happened and who was there and how things looked. I think anyone who has ever had a smidgen of doubt should read this book. I also think any person that has ever wondered what Heaven is like would enjoy it as well. Just in time for the movie that is coming out on September 11, I have the awesome opportunity to give away a copy of the movie edition of the book to one lucky fan! The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster by Scott Wilbanks

*Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

Annabelle Aster doesn't bow to convention—not even that of space and time—which makes the 1890s Kansas wheat field that has appeared in her modern-day San Francisco garden easy to accept. Even more exciting is Elsbeth, the truculent schoolmarm who sends Annie letters through the mysterious brass mailbox perched on the picket fence that now divides their two worlds. In this unconventional and enchanting tale, Annie and her new neighbor must solve the mystery of what connects them before one of them is convicted of a murder that has yet to happen…and somehow already did.

My thoughts-

This is the type of book that is a rare gem. Not only is their mystery and intrigue, but it is super funny. There is plenty of meat in the dialogue to keep you turning the pages. I love books that offer a different reality within reality, so I really enjoyed the two dimensions/time travel plot of the story. Annie and El exchange some wondrously witty and snarky letters that I absolutely love. It was so much fun seeing them tell each other about what is going on in their lives and how that leads to some crazy adventures. I am not easy to surprise as far as twists in plots and I was taken aback a couple of times during this book. It is not often that you find such a fresh refreshingly different story among the fiction novels offered today, especially considering this is a debut novel. I look forward to what the future holds for Scott Wilbanks. I recommend The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster to anyone who likes to read contemporary fiction.

Essential Turkish Cuisine by Engin Akine (Cookbook Review)

*Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

Engin Akin shares her culinary mastery and describes the evolution of Turkey's diverse culture of food in Essential Turkish Cuisine. Complete with 200 recipes found across the country, including traditional dolmas, kebabs, halva, and more, this definitive book offers rare insight into the myriad influences on modern Turkish cooking.

Featuring a wide range of large and small plates—from Stuffed Peppers and Eggplant to Lamb with Quince, Fresh Sour Cherry Hosaf to Crepes with Tahini and Pekmez—Akin includes expert instruction for each dish. Through these recipes and the gorgeous photographs of Turkey—its bustling markets, its food, and its traditions—Akin shares the country's rich heritage and brings the spirit of Turkey into your kitchen.

My thoughts-

Essential Turkish Cuisine is an extremely well thought out cookbook. It very thoroughly explains the background of Turkish food and it's Persian roots. It also offers wonderful descriptions and explanations of ingredients you will want to stock your kitchen with if you plan to make Turkish food. I have always thought there was pretty much one way to make dolmas but this book offers several takes on the stuffed grape leaves alone. My previous exposure to Turkish food was limited to kofta kabob, dolmas, and baklava. Essential Turkish Cuisine includes so many recipes it would probably take me a year to try them all out, even if I attempted one every few days. If you are a foodie, love Middle Eastern food or just want to be adventurous, Essential Turkish Cuisine is a beautiful cookbook that you won't want to put down.

Besh Big Easy: 101 Home Cooked New Orleans Recipes by John Besh (Cookbook Reviews)

Disclosure of material connection- I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are 100% my own.

About the book-

In Besh Big Easy: 101 Home-Cooked New Orleans Recipes, award-winning chef John Besh makes his favorite hometown cooking accessible to a wide audience of cooks and readers.

In this, his fourth book, the award-winning chef John Besh takes another deep dive into the charm and authenticity of the cuisine of his hometown, New Orleans.
Besh Big Easy: 101 Home-Cooked New Orleans Recipes, is a fresh and delightful new look at his signature food. Besh Big Easy will feature all new recipes, published in a refreshing new flexibound format and accessible to cooks everywhere. Much has changed since Besh wrote his bestselling My New Orleans in 2009. His restaurant empire has grown from two to nine acclaimed eateries, from the highly praised Restaurant August to the just opened farm-to-table taqueria, Johnny Sanchez. John's television career has blossomed as well. He's become known to millions as host of two national public television cooking shows based on his books and of Hungry Investors on Spike TV. Besh Big Easy is dedicated to accessibility. "There's no reason a good jambalaya needs two dozen ingredients," John says. In this book, jambalaya has less than ten, but sacrifices nothing in the way of flavor. With 101 original, personal recipes such as Mr. Sam's Stuffed Crabs, Duck Camp Shrimp & Grits, and Silver Queen Corn Pudding, Besh Big Easy is chock-full of the vivid personality that has made John Besh such a popular American culinary icon.

My thoughts-

My husband and I (and now our three kids) love to travel. One of our favorite places to visit is new Orleans. We love the music scene and how the city itself feels like worlds away from other cities in the United States. There is just nowhere else in the world that I have been that is like New Orleans. It dances to to the beat of it's own drum. One of the many components of that individuality is the food. Cajun and Creole food is delicious and once again very specific to that region. We love the kick from the spices used and my husband enjoys the wide array of seafood available. since NOLA is quite a drive from our house, I love the idea of having a cookbook devoted to just the types of food that come from there. Besh Big Easy offers recipes for all of the types of foods you would expect to find in New Orleans- jambalaya, gumbo, rice and beans, great sides, a vast array of seafood, fantastic sides and delectable southern desserts. This cookbook will keep you busy because there are so many recipes you will want to try. Besh is a trusted authority on Big Easy cooking so you know these recipes are legit. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to be adventurous in the kitchen or who just loves the food that can only be found in Louisiana. Why not recreate it and serve it up in your own kitchen, wherever that may be.
